P.E.

In a small school like BFA, it is typical for teachers to end up teaching subjects they never thought they would. When the athletic director decided to switch to a very necessary position in the personnel department, there were some classes that needed to be filled. Being the small community that it is, people know things about you. News travels very quickly! It was discovered that I like running and playing soccer. I was asked if I wanted to teach the 1st period Personal Fitness class instead of study hall. I didn’t want to leave my study hall kids, so I offered instead to fill the 2nd period PE slot every Friday.

The class is called “Individual sports,” so during the week the students play various sports like pickeball, tennis, table tennis, and badminton. On Fridays, however, they have a free day. This means that they have the option of doing whatever physical activity they choose to do.

Out of the 6 kids in the class, 2  usually use the exercise machines, 1 plays basketball, and 3 do several random things (lacrosse, soccer, comet tail ball, climb up the basketball hoop to retrieve objects from the balcony, etc.).

Will it make it??

Will the ball go in??

Today I passed the soccer ball back & forth with one of the kids. Playing soccer gives me energy for the rest of the day.

The soccer balls are green and fuzzy - perfect for indoor soccer with no shin guards!

I don’t wear shin guards when I play soccer every Sunday night, but I usually don’t get hurt (although the occasional shin-to-shin or shoe-to-shin hit can leave a small bruise).

BFA is definitely a unique place, and I love that I get to do more than just teach music!
