First Performance

The orchestra had its first performance this week! Yesterday the two girls performed “In a Monastary” and “The Vagabond” at the Monday Recital. It was a good, low-key way to have our first performance. The girls played well, though they were a bit nervous since it was their debut!

Today, after a switcheroo day (the violinist played cello and the cellist played violin), the cellist said, “We’re having lots of orchestra bonding time!” Our group, though it is small, is tight. We have a great time working together, and we hope that the size will grow! Our joy and energy will hopefully draw others to join our group.

Beginning of Fall

It’s beginning to look like fall around here!

Most of the leaves are still green, but there are definitely smatterings of bright colors!

On Sunday, Rachel and I went on a hike in preparation for her nature hike with her 7th grade science class.

One of the stations was the Animal Long Jump. Visitors can jump into the long jump pit and see how they compare to several forest animals.

The squirrel jumps a whopping 3.6 meters!

Silence….

This week has been very quiet with the seniors in Rome. The hallways just do not seem as full as they normally do, and the noise level is significantly lower.

My study hall numbers were at an all-time low. This is what the room looked like today:

Only one student!

Only one student! The other was in the bathroom at the time of this photo.

I actually had 3 students, but 2 of them alternated days. One of my violin students joined study hall for a few days this week because he had injured himself in PE and couldn’t play.

For devotions this week, we talked about what it means to be prepared to give a defense for the hope we have within us. Today, we prayed for specific friends of ours who are not believers, using Colossians 4:2-6 as a guide.

The seniors arrived partway through study hall, so of course the two kids ran out and had a joyful reunion with the seniors. Relationships here are very close, so when kids are gone for a week, the return is treated like a return from summer vacation.

With the bus pulling up right outside study hall window, the kids had lots of distractions!

Looking ahead:

Saturday – run (?), training for ACSI, movie night, skype!!

Sunday – nature hike to prepare for Rachel’s science class, Bible study/London trip planning, Eis Cafe/orchestra talk with Katie, soccer

Monday – Orchestra is playing in open recital

Wednesday – Solos and duets are playing at the nursing home next to the school

You Know you Live in Germany When…. #2

You know you live in Germany when you go to the grocery store and come out with a tree and boxes of milk that go on your shelf.

Yes, a tree. Rachel and I bought a tree yesterday at PennyMarkt (it’s a lot like Aldi).

Tree from grocery store

Tree from grocery store

We now own a tree! It’s very small, but exciting! Grocery stores here sell random items that change each week – anything from flash drives to clothing to table cloths to plants to ski equipment.

Now to explain the milk.

H-Reduced fat Milk

H-Reduced fat Milk

Milk comes in liter boxes, not gallons jugs. This particular type of milk is made to last a long time on a shelf without needing to be refrigerated. This is very good, because refrigerators here are much smaller, so we do not have room to keep 3 liters of milk in the fridge. We would have to buy milk 3 times a week if we couldn’t keep it on the shelf! I don’t want to know what kind of preservatives they have to put in the milk to make it last, though. Milk also comes in .3% fat, 1.5%, and whole milk.

We go through a lot of milk because of the amazing cereals here (Knusper Muesli – like big crispy granola, Nougat bits – basically nutella inside a cereal, Snow Flakes – basically Frosted Flakes, Wellness Flakes Knusper – crispy hazelnut flavored flakes). When we want to drink something, however, we prefer to savor the refreshing snap of Apfelschorle.

Carbonated Apple Juice

Carbonated Apple Juice

You may be wondering – what is so great about carbonated apple juice? Well, to me it tastes like biting into a crisp apple, but with all the refreshing goodness of a cool drink of water.

Rachel and I have also discovered a favorite German snack: Fire Dragons!

Feuer Drachen (Fire Dragons)

Feuer Drachen (Fire Dragons)

Don’t be fooled by the “Hot and Spicy” label on the bag. For one who has a penchant for Blazin’ wings at BWW, this is very tame. Most German food is really not spicy at all. Compared to the good Mexican food in West Chicago, this is bland. Tasty, but not spicy. Feuer Drachens’ roar is worse than their flame, but they still taste really good. They are so much fun to eat – each crisp is in the shape of a  little dragon!

Grocery shopping is always an adventure – we never know what goodies (or hoodies) will be nestled among the Wurstchen and soup mixes!

This Week

I’ve gotten behind on my blogging this week (probably has something to do with writing a newsletter…), so here’s one for everything that has happened so far.

On Saturday, I did some grocery shopping, then went for a nice long run into Liel (2 towns over). It was a beautiful sunny day, and a few leaves are starting to fall! The rest of the day I relaxed and caught up on work. There was a kitten that walked into my house while I was hanging laundry up outside. I think it left through the living room window, although I never saw it leave so it could still be sitting in my house somewhere.

Rachel spent half the day at IKEA and bought a new desk chair. She put it together herself, which was fun (I didn’t really help much – I was taking pictures!).

Rachel had fun assembling her new chair!

Sunday was another gorgeous day (apparently we’ve been having unusually sunny weather. To me, this is typical fall weather). I met up with Kirsten (director of Stadtmusik Kandern) and Katie (BFA instrumental teacher) for lunch at Asia Wok. Then we went for a short hike up to a memorial overlooking Kandern.

After the hike, we had the first Bible study meeting at my house. Julie and Laura (2 student teachers from Cedarville) joined Katie, Rachel, and me. We watched the Esther movie since we are planning on doing the Beth Moore Bible study on Esther. Then I played soccer at BFA with a bunch of guys.

Monday after school was the first Monday Recital. For those of you at Wheaton, this is much like that Wednesday open recitals we have for the Conserve. It gives the kids a chance to perform in a more informal setting. The orchestra will be playing on October 12.

After the recital, I went to HBR for dorm subbing. I made a giant batch of chocolate chip cookies and helped a couple boys learn their English vocab words for a quiz the next day. It’s really fun and rewarding to help kids with homework. I am grateful that my job here at BFA is not limited to only teaching music; there are tons of other things I love teaching and doing, and I get the chance to do them with study hall and subbing in the dorm.

Tuesday morning we had Chamber Strings before school. There are 3 pairs of students working on duets now. There may be another duet or trio when the beginners can play enough to play together.

Yesterday I had a new student for his first lesson. I now have 15 students, including one dorm mom who I will teach for the first time next week!

Today I had bus duty in the morning. Lunch was interesting. There had been a soccer competition after school for the past month or so, and the championship team played a match against the staff team. I was the token female on the staff team. We lost 5 to 1. I could make excuses, like “the kids had been playing together as a team the whole time so they know each other’s playing abilities” or “they had subs and we didn’t” or “we weren’t used to playing on the slippery sand-covered tennis court,” but in reality, the kids were just really good.

The scene of our defeat.

The scene of our defeat.

On a brighter note, Gustav ze Bretzel Boy has started to earn his keep here in my office. After putting up the sign with his name, a few coins appeared in his goblet. There was even a US dime! They disappeared yesterday, however, so Gustav had better learn how to hold onto his possessions. Today, though, I came to school and his goblet was full of M&Ms. They were gone by 3rd period.

"Where did my M&Ms go?"

"Where did my M&Ms go?"

The mystery remains: who put the M&Ms in the goblet? Perhaps some teacher hoping to get rid of extra sweets, or a student who disliked M&Ms but had been given a bag, or someone who just wanted to add a bit of color (and sugar) to the day.

Tonight I’ll go to Maughenhard dorm to help with dinner (Rachel subs there every Thursday and it’s an excuse to hang out with Amanda the RA), then go to band practice.

Tomorrow I get a bit of a break. It is the annual class field trips. Seniors go to Rome (they leave tonight and won’t be back until the end of next week), Juniors go to Normandy (they get back on Monday), and Sophomores and Freshmen have one-day only field trips tomorrow. I’ll sleep in (yay!), come to school to get some work done, and teach an elementary student after school is out. It is nice to have a long weekend once in a while!

BFA Spirit Day

Today was a spirit day: Dress Up like your Favorite Bible Character. Let me tell you, there were some characters at school today!

It's not often that you see the "Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil" sitting down to eat lunch.

It's not often that you see the "Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil"(right) sitting down to eat lunch.

Other characters included Roman soldiers, various toga-clad individuals, John the Baptist wearing a sheepskin skirt (fortunately there were shorts underneath!), the bear from 2 Kings 2, several pregnant Virgin Marys, and the Angel of Death (wearing a ski mask and brandishing a broadsword of all things!).

On an unrelated note, the voting results are in: The Pretzel Man has been named Gustav ze Bretzel Boy!

Orchestra Fun

Last Sunday night I had my orchestra girls over to my house for a movie night. We watched “August Rush” while eating popcorn, apples & carrots with peanut butter, cookies, and quesadillas. It was a nice night of bonding for the three of us.

Today, the weather was surprisingly nice, so I took our class outside to play. As my friends from Wheaton know, it’s hard to keep me inside on a nice day, so I’m glad the girls also wanted to be outside! It was good practice for them to play in a wide open space. They had to work a lot harder to make a big sound, especially with only two of them. I’m excited by their progress; as the only ones playing their parts, they cannot slack off. It is a great learning experience for them. I only hope that more can join in the fun of playing in orchestra!

Müllheim and Staufen

This weekend was packed full of fun!

On Saturday I went with Amanda Kelly (RA at Maug), Janis, and Grace to Müllheim and Staufen. Müllheim is a town on the way from Kandern to Staufen.

We saw some unusual things in Müllheim. There was the creepy clown dancing…..

and some nice trees (rather small)

After spending a bit of time in Müllheim, we went on to Staufen. There was a historical fair (kind of like a Renaissance fair) going on in the town. The first thing we saw when we got out of the car was a pair of Musketeers hacking away at a stick in the bushes by the side of the road. Apparently they needed that branch for something, and what else would you do with those swords?

An authentic stick from the park, to be used for some historically significant purpose.

There were many interesting sights to see, with the Staufeners dressed up as people from all eras. There were animals in the streets (horses carrying princesses, goats and ponies being led by small children, dogs following their masters, and many others.

Sheep turn out to be useful as their wool can be brushed and spun into thread on the spinning wheel.

There was a lot of music around town, too. From the marching bands announcing victory down the streets to the traveling Medieval minstrels, there was always something interesting to hear.

Drum, early bassoon, and hurdy-gurdy!

We also hiked up the hill to the castle ruins.

We saw the beautiful sunset from the castle on the hill.

Finally, there was a torchlight parade in the evening. As 1000 years of history paraded before us, we were glad to have experienced a historical celebration in one of the actual places where the historical events happened.

Spiritual Emphasis Week 2009

This week is Spiritual Emphasis Week for BFA. There are chapel services every day; BFA brought in a band and a speaker for the week.

Pray that this week would be a time of growth for the students and that we as teachers would be able to encourage them in their growth.
