Ecclesiastes and Advent?

What’s the connection? What is the message of Ecclesiastes?

In study hall today, I wanted to wrap up one student’s preliminary study of Ecclesiastes, while including other topics of discussion from the last semester.

The first part of Ecclesiastes is about how it would appear that there is no distinction between those who do good deeds and those who do evil. Everyone dies and loses any earthly gain they had.  Both the wise and the foolish end up as worm food. Solomon observes that all goals in life seem pointless.

Though the book of Ecclesiastes seems very different from other books of the Bible, the same themes can be found all over the place. Here is my compilation of several verses from various books of the Bible that back up the same 3 statements that can be gleaned from Ecclesiastes: 1. Why does it seem like there is no justice for the wicked in this life? 2. God will ultimately bring judgment on the wicked. 3. God will reward those who seek His Kingdom.

The Wicked seemingly prosper

–       Ecclesiastes 8:10 Then too, I saw the wicked buried—those who used to come and go from the holy place and receive praise [a] in the city where they did this. This too is meaningless.

–       Malachi 3:13-15 “You have said harsh things against me,” says the LORD. “Yet you ask, ‘What have we said against you?’ “You have said, ‘It is futile to serve God. What did we gain by carrying out his requirements and going about like mourners before the LORD Almighty? But now we call the arrogant blessed. Certainly the evildoers prosper, and even those who challenge God escape.’ “

–       James 4:13-14 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

–       Matthew 6:5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.

God will bring Judgment on the Wicked

–       Ecclesiastes 11:9; 12:13-14 Be happy, young man, while you are young, and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth. Follow the ways of your heart and whatever your eyes see, but know that for all these things God will bring you to judgment. Now all has been heard; 12:13 here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.

–       Malachi 4:1 “Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and that day that is coming will set them on fire,” says the LORD Almighty. “Not a root or a branch will be left to them.

–       James 5:1-6 Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. 2Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. 3Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. 4Look! The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. 5You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter.[a] 6You have condemned and murdered innocent men, who were not opposing you.

–       Matthew 7:1-2 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

–       Revelation 22:10-13 10Then he told me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, because the time is near. 11Let him who does wrong continue to do wrong; let him who is vile continue to be vile; let him who does right continue to do right; and let him who is holy continue to be holy.” 12“Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done. 13I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.

God will Reward Those who Seek His Kingdom

–       Ecclesiastes 8:12 Although a wicked man commits a hundred crimes and still lives a long time, I know that it will go better with God-fearing men, who are reverent before God.

–       Malachi 3:16-18 Then those who feared the LORD talked with each other, and the LORD listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the LORD and honored his name. 17 “They will be mine,” says the LORD Almighty, “in the day when I make up my treasured possession. [a] I will spare them, just as in compassion a man spares his son who serves him. 18 And you will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.

–       James 5:7-9 Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains. 8You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. 9Don’t grumble against each other, brothers, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!

–       Matthew 6:19-21, 33 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

–       Revelation 22:7, 14 “Behold, I am coming soon! Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy in this book.”  14“Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city.

Summary: The wicked prosper sometimes, but do not envy their worldly prosperity. It will fade; it is meaningless in the long run, and they will be judged. Do not envy the self-seeking. Do not seek your own worldly prosperity; rather, seek first the kingdom of God, found in following God’s own humble statement of servanthood in becoming human (see Philippians 2).

Jesus’ first coming made it possible for us to share in Christ’s heavenly treasures and inaugurated His kingdom. Jesus’ birth was announced to shepherds, the lowest of the low. If we are to seek Jesus’ kingdom first, what kind of kingdom should we be seeking? We should obviously not be seeking worldly prosperity.

At Jesus’ second coming, judgment will come. The internal life, the thoughts of the heart, will be revealed. This will mean punishment for the sinful and eternal treasure for the righteous. We can pray “Your kingdom come,” and mean it. Pray that God would hasten His reign and expand His rule and authority over the hearts of others around us. Encourage others else to let Jesus be king of their lives!  How can you be a part of the coming Kingdom?

Many people sought Jesus’ first coming, and we celebrate His birth even now. But are you eagerly awaiting His second coming? Are you living like a citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven?

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

Woodwind and Brass Day

On Monday I gave the orchestra girls a chance to try some other instruments. Earlier in the semester we had talked about all the different families of instruments in orchestra, and since then the girls had been dying to try playing them. I brought in a flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone (and some disinfectant spray) and let the girls go at it. My cellist was able to play a G major scale on flute by the end, and my violinist was able to play Hot Cross Buns on clarinet!

Attempting to play Hot Cross Buns on trombone and clarinet

Both of them gained a new appreciation for the amount of air brass players need when they play. They were amazed at how funny their lips felt after playing, too!

As this is concert week, Gustav’s decor has reached an end.

Here he is, wrapped up with ribbons and sparkles!

Here he is, wrapped up with ribbons and sparkles!

It is a good thing he is not a child, or he would be humiliated wearing ribbons! He will soon return to his ordinary status as the Pretzel Man, though living at BFA there will surely be more adventures ahead.

The students still have the adventure of Christmas Concert coming up very soon. The concert will be at 15:00 on this coming Sunday. We have been rehearsing before and after school, and they are finally ready. It should be a memorable experience, with lots of good music and fun with friends.

Daniella was nervous – it was her first concert with the Kandern band!

Smiling despite the nerves - probably because the crazy American was taking weird pictures.

The concert went very well. Several BFA people played in the concert.

David Love, Julie Johnson, me, Renata Bultema, David McCormick, Catherine Love, David Grano, Katie Roberts

Three Davids in one group…. there must be some connection between the name David and playing in band!

Suzanne was putting the keyboards away in the first picture.

Half the music department played in the concert!

On Sunday, Rachel and other BFA teachers performed their handbells in a Mennonite church in Basel. I wanted to hear them play (especially since Rachel is my roommate!), so I tagged along and took pictures.

The members of the church loved the "Weihnachtsglöcken" (Christmas bells)

The pastor preached from Philippians 2. I didn’t agree with everything he said (specifically when he said “Jesus hat seine Herrlichkeit im Himmel verlassen,” which means “Jesus left his glory in Heaven,”), and if you are wondering why I disagree with that,  you can read what my dad wrote about the Kenosis issue:

http://kenosis.info/index.shtml

Despite that statement, he did firmly say that Christ was fully man and fully God, and he had some good things to say.

The people at the church were very friendly and welcoming. They provided us with an excellent lunch after the service!

We enjoyed the meal together.

A fun weekend with fun music!

Jury Duty

This week was an unusual week of school for the music department. We had juries for all private lesson students in middle and high school.

Each student played scales and one or two solo pieces. Each student’s private teacher was present at the jury, along with 1 or 2 other music teachers. It served as a check-up not only for the students, but also for the teachers.

It is interesting having multiple teachers cooperating and working together in this way. If we were each teaching lessons in our own private studios, it would be easy to get stuck in a teaching rut. Juries helped me to see each student from a different perspective. I like the positive dynamic we have here in the music department.

Christmas Spirit

Gustav announced the Spirit day

Tuesday was Orchestra’s spirit day.

We put the batteries in the hat - look at the flashing red lights!

The orchestra girls and I wore matching Gustav hats around school all day…

Here we are before orchestra....

…and played a piece backwards in class.

We played with our hats on in orchestra class!

We wore our hats for the backwards experiment.

To play the music backwards, we started at the end of Evening Prayer and played every single note from the end to the beginning. I recorded it on my camera, so hopefully I will be able to find someone who knows how to play a movie in reverse.

Looking back to another instance of orchestra’s Christmas spirit:

My student's mom took this picture when we went to the nursing home last week.

My study hall is also starting to get into the Christmas spirit. After asking permission, we started decorating the windows with our snowflakes.

This is the first batch of window snowflakes.

This is the first batch of window snowflakes.

For the next week, we will continue to add to the collection until the whole section of windows is covered in snowflakes!

All of the students have presented their Bible study topics/passages. Tomorrow we will be doing a prayer walk around the school, and next week will be some reflections on Christmas – the real meaning, not just snowflakes and good deeds and light-up hats.

Immanuel – God with us – what an incredible thought! Tomorrow, we will walk with Him in prayer as He walked with us.

Christmas Banquet and Market

Yesterday (Saturday) was BFA’s annual Christmas Banquet.

The theme of the night: Candyland

The theme of the night: Candyland

Banquet is a chance for all the girls to get dressed up in their prettiest dresses (or their friends’ dresses), do hair, makeup, and nails for half the day, and get worried about their date (or lack thereof). The boys spend the month preceding banquet worrying about how to ask that special girl and what to do if she says no. The boy dorms have T-shirt ironing days to make sure everyone goes to banquet looking their very best.

Banquet tables

After taking pictures and complimenting each other on hair, makeup, shirts, etc., everyone goes inside for the dinner/entertainment time. The entertainment includes singing, humor, granting wishes, parent notes, and crowning the Princes and Princesses of the evening.

The singing ranged from rap to Christmas carols to pop songs, and humor took the form of monologues and skits.

Granting wishes is a BFA Christmas Banquet tradition. In the preceding month, students and teachers submit wishes. At Banquet, some wishes are granted. One teacher placed roses on every table and wished that one person from each table would take that rose and give it to his wife.

Everyone crowds around Mrs. Bryan to give her a rose

Everyone crowds around Mrs. Bryan to give her a rose

This was a somewhat elaborate wish. Others were as simple as wishing for a pizza or Feuer Drachen chips. One boy was not expecting his wish for “sparkly underwear” to be granted, but to his embarrassment, it was. Another student wished that K-pop (Korean pop music) would be played in the halls between classes, so we will be experiencing that on Friday.

Parents send emails to be read aloud to their children at Banquet. Parent notes range from funny to sweet to serious, and several of them had Christmas song parodies and rhymes. The kids in the spotlight suffered from embarrassment as all the students and teachers listen to what their parents have to say to them. Everyone else usually enjoys listening, but the chosen student wants to hide!

Christmas Banquet was a fun evening. Kudos to student council and everyone who helped organize the massive project!

My week did not have enough Christmas in it with just the Christmas Banquet. Today (Sunday) I went to the Basel Christmas market with several friends. The lights and decorations were very festive. The booths had lots of beautiful trinkets, decorations, and ornaments.

One booth held this incredible miniature town

At booths like those, I could have spent hours just looking at all the intricate details.

Though I did not actually buy any trinkets from the market, it was fun to wander around and see the beautiful handiwork of skilled artists.

P.E.

In a small school like BFA, it is typical for teachers to end up teaching subjects they never thought they would. When the athletic director decided to switch to a very necessary position in the personnel department, there were some classes that needed to be filled. Being the small community that it is, people know things about you. News travels very quickly! It was discovered that I like running and playing soccer. I was asked if I wanted to teach the 1st period Personal Fitness class instead of study hall. I didn’t want to leave my study hall kids, so I offered instead to fill the 2nd period PE slot every Friday.

The class is called “Individual sports,” so during the week the students play various sports like pickeball, tennis, table tennis, and badminton. On Fridays, however, they have a free day. This means that they have the option of doing whatever physical activity they choose to do.

There is a lot of sports equipment in the weight room, including these basket balls

There is a lot of sports equipment in the weight room, including these basketballs

Out of the 6 kids in the class, 2  usually use the exercise machines, 1 plays basketball, and 3 do several random things (lacrosse, soccer, comet tail ball, climb up the basketball hoop to retrieve objects from the balcony, etc.).

Will it make it??

Will the ball go in??

Today I passed the soccer ball back & forth with one of the kids. Playing soccer gives me energy for the rest of the day.

The soccer balls are green and fuzzy - perfect for indoor soccer with no shin guards!

I don’t wear shin guards when I play soccer every Sunday night, but I usually don’t get hurt (although the occasional shin-to-shin or shoe-to-shin hit can leave a small bruise).

BFA is definitely a unique place, and I love that I get to do more than just teach music!

Thanksgiving #2

Happy Thanksgiving to all who live in the good ol’ USA!

I had my second Thanksgiving feast of the year with my WorldVenture family. It’s not quite the same as being home with my real family, but I am thankful to have friends here!

My WorldVenture buddies, Amanda and Katrina

My WorldVenture buddies, Amanda and Katrina

It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving at home without the smell of bread dressing cooking in the oven, so that’s what I brought to the feast.

There it is, waiting to be eaten!

There it is, waiting to be eaten!

I am thankful for a lot of things right now:

  • A family that loves me
  • The wonderful friends I have here
  • My health
  • The ability to do all kinds of things I enjoy
  • God’s everlasting faithfulness
  • Sunshine
  • Fresh air
  • Music
  • The fact that God knows all of me – He doesn’t just see one side of me or know me in one context; He knows all of me, and He wants me to continue getting to know Him better

“For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.” – 1 Corinthians 13:12

Longing for intimacy with God is like longing for home. I see my family in the Skype video chat dimly, but next summer I’ll see them face to face. We glimpse God’s character through His actions in the world and through reading His Word and praying, but one day we will know Him fully, just as He fully knows us.

I am thankful that we have a God who does not hide Himself from us, but reveals to us what we are able to understand of Himself at each stage in our lives.

You Know You Live In Germany When . . . #3

You know you live in Germany when Christmas doesn’t wait for Thanksgiving.

Christmas comes early here, but then again, why shouldn’t it? There is no Thanksgiving to hold it back.

Yesterday, this is what went up:

Christmas decorations on Hauptstrasse (Main Street)

Christmas decorations on Hauptstrasse (Main Street)

There have been Christmas items in the grocery store for a few weeks now, too – that’s how I got Gustav’s glitzy getup.

There is another reason why Christmas comes early here: It actually does! In addition to Christmas Day on the 25th, there is a Saint Nicholas Day on December 10th. This is the “Santa Clause” side of Christmas. He gets his own day in Germany, so Jesus can have Christmas day all to Himself (or at least, that’s what I’m hoping!). On Nikolastag, kids put their shoes outside the doors and hope that “Saint Nicholas” will come fill them with oranges, chocolate, and good things like that. When St. Nick comes to town on the train, all the kids follow him around to different shops and get candy from the shop owners (like trick-or-treating). It’s like Christmas and Halloween all rolled into one day for the kids.
